Series: By Request
Message – Finances & Stewardship I
By Request is a segment of our normal Wednesday nights when I address and open for discussion, topics which have placed in a “suggestion box” as topics people in the church are interested in learning more about.
This weeks’ pick was concerning Finances and Stewardship.
Paul said quite a bit about giving and there are three basic categories into which all giving falls.
- Giving to the poor.
- Giving to missions.
- Giving to ministers.
We will cover each of these in order…
Number 1 – Giving to the poor
I am presenting this in a Q & A format, since we have covered this in some depth not so long ago.
Q1. Who do we give to?
A1. Brothers in need FIRST and then the lost.
Q2. When do we give?
A2. For a brother – when we see them in need and have the ability to relieve them. – James 2:16
For the lost – When they ask. – Matt. 5:42.
Q3. How generously do we give?
A3. LAVISHLY! – Matt. 5:40-48
Q4. Who are we to pay careful attention to?
A4. Orphans, widows, the homeless & FAMILY – Acts 6:1-6; 1 Tim. 5:3-16
Q5. What about special collections – are they scriptural?
A5. Absolutely! – 1 Cor. 16:1-3
Further instructions to the rich…
- Those who are rich in this life are to give and be READY to share their wealth- 1 Tim. 6:17-19.
- Those who are rich are to be careful to consider and give to those brothers who are constantly in need.
- “But whoever has as a constant possession the necessities of life, and deliberately keeps on contemplating his brother constantly having need, and snaps shut his heart from him, how is it possible that the love of God is abiding in him? “ – 1 John 3:17
Number 2 – Giving to the support of missions
Php. 4:10-19, “(10) But I rejoiced in the Lord greatly that now at last your care for me has flourished again; though you surely did care, but you lacked opportunity. (11) Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content: (12) I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need. (13) I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. (14) Nevertheless you have done well that you shared in my distress. (15) Now you Philippians know also that in the beginning of the gospel, when I departed from Macedonia, no church shared with me concerning giving and receiving but you only. (16) For even in Thessalonica you sent aid once and again for my necessities. (17) Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the fruit that abounds to your account. (18) Indeed I have all and abound. I am full, having received from Epaphroditus the things sent from you, a sweet-smelling aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well pleasing to God. (19) And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”
2Cor. 11:5-9, “(5) For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles. (6) Even though I am untrained in speech, yet I am not in knowledge. But we have been thoroughly manifested among you in all things. (7) Did I commit sin in humbling myself that you might be exalted, because I preached the gospel of God to you free of charge? (8) I robbed other churches, taking wages from them to minister to you. (9) And when I was present with you, and in need, I was a burden to no one, for what I lacked the brethren who came from Macedonia supplied. And in everything I kept myself from being burdensome to you, and so I will keep myself.”
This is where we left off this week. We will resume from here next Wednesday…Blessings!
